The Inishbofin Summer School is a week long exploration of the wonderful island of Inishbofin in the company of a multi-disciplined team that includes botanists, artists, marine biologists, musicians and archaeologists. Great music every night, special mid-week concert – proceeds go to music projects on the island. Art / music / dance workshops for adults and also for young people. This is our 28th year and as usual we have planned lots of special events. Our stylish buffet will take place on Wednesday night in Days Hotel and again it will be fancy dress with brilliant prizes for best costume etc.  For our 25th some groups wrote some brilliant sketches and maybe we could have more of the same?  We will also have some extra events such as Sean-Nós dance workshop and art class. Also this year we will be putting an emphasis on IT so bring your camera. Needless to say tog out well – good boots or strong shoes, good weather gear – especially rain trousers.

Cillian Roden – Freelance scientist – Cillian is an experienced ecologist with a great interest in Conamara  – a brilliant communicator.

Stephen McCormack – Zoologist – Stephen has a special interest in the world of ‘creeping creatures’ and an interest in bogs and wetlands.

Eugenie Regan – Ecologist – with a broad knowledge of Irish natural history with particular interest in the world of ‘mini beasts’.

Eoin McGrath – Geologist – An exciting young ecologist with a deep understanding of the complex geology of Conamara.

Leo Hallissey – Teacher/environmentalist – Leo, an experienced teacher, has been involved in environmental education for the last 25 years.

Inishbofin

Inis Bó Finne – Island of the White Cow – is a beautiful island off the Conamara coast.  It has a population of almost two hundred people with a long history of occupation dating back to the Stone Age.  It has several prehistoric sites; an early Christian monastery and a star shaped fort dating to the 17th century.  The island is about five miles long by four miles wide and has a variety of habitats ideal for exploring, ranging from the sea stacks and promontory forts in the north-west to the dramatic cliffs in the north east.  Beautiful meadows full of wild flowers.  Excellent beaches and swimming facilities, and hail or sunshine we’ll swim daily! Inishbofin is famous for its music, the Inishbofin Ceili Band is well known throughout the country. The best of traditional music will be played throughout the week. Read more about Inishbofin here.

Ferry departs from Cleggan – 8 miles from Clifden . Ferries leave daily at 11.30 a.m. – 2.00 p.m. and 6.30 p.m.  – the journey is 40 minutes on a fully equipped modern ferryboat. Further information about the Island Discovery ferry to Inishbofin here.

A big part of our festival is the lovely natural mixing of ages. Our official opening with its mix of young musicians and ‘senior’ players sets the scene for a natural intergenerational mix which in many ways is unique to our country and particularly evident in Conamara. This mix remains a cornerstone of our festival. In essence Conamara Bog Week provides a space to nourish ourselves and to give vent to this generous creative force that is so much part of Conamara. Connquest Connemara is on Saturday 13th April 2013. It takes place in the Connemara National Park and then passes Kylemore Abbey on the way to Kylemore House.

Conquest Connemara is a 23k adventure race that involves running, cycling and a proper assault coarse. At any time during the race you will be faced with various challenges such as archery, beam walking, paint ball shooting and a few surprises. Successfully completed challenges will allow you direct passage, fail and you will incur a 100 meter penalty loop. So it’s a test of skill and fitness.

The race distance is 23 km and the cost is €45.00 per person. All participants will receive a free cotton t-shirt and refreshments at the end of the race.  The race starts and finishes in Letterfrack.  Tech T-shirts are availabe to purchase for €10.00 (you can select this during registration).

Note: 14-18 year olds can now complete in this race if their waiver form is signed by their parent or guardian.

Clifden today is a vibrant and cosmopolitan town on the very edge of Europe. It has a population of 2,609 but the hinterland which it serves as the administrative and economic capital to has almost 10,000 inhabitants (source; Census 2011). The town known as the “Capital of Connemara” boasts a thriving tourism industry as its unique and picturesque setting between the foothills of the Twelve Bens and the Atlantic Ocean attracts thousands of visitors annually.

Although the tourism industry is undoubtedly the most important in terms of local employment the town has a significant service industry to serve the region throughout the year. Clifden is the administrative centre for local government, judicial, banking, medical, professional and retail services for the entire west Connemara area.

Agriculture and fishing continues to play an important role in Connemara, and although Clifden doesn’t have a commercial fishing port it is an important centre for agricultural activity in Connemara. Trading in cattle, sheep and Connemara ponies continues throughout the year in Clifden. In fact the “Olympics” of Connemara Pony shows takes place in Clifden with breeders and enthusiasts travelling from around the globe to the famous agricultural show each August.

Sport and outdoor pursuits play a very active role in Clifden society. Both Gaelic football and rugby are the main field sports played but golf, sea and river fishing, sailing and hill walking also feature prominently as local pastimes. The Connemara championship links near Clifden is in fact one of the most popular links courses in the country.

The town skyline continues to be dominated by the twin spires of the two churches, St Joseph’s Catholic Church and Christ Church of Ireland. Although the principal religion in the area is catholic there is a significant protestant tradition in west Connemara served by the Clifden church.

Music and the arts continue to be celebrated in Clifden. Traditional Irish music and song have long been associated with Connemara and Clifden still rings to the sound of our own traditional music and culture throughout the year but in particular during the busy tourist season. The town boasts the longest running community arts festival in Ireland each September when the Clifden community arts week has its annual celebration of all that is wonderful in culture and the arts in the area.

Clifden has come a long way since its embryonic days in 1812. Today it represents all that is good about life in the west of Ireland, good food, good friends and good craic. Thousands of visitors each year stroll around its streets, sampling the local cuisine, exploring the many local shops and generally relaxing in the very convivial atmosphere for which Clifden is renowned. Although the weather cannot always be guaranteed, what is certain is that the Clifden will leave the weary traveller, relaxed, rejuvenated and eager to return again. The town just recently celebrated it’s 200th birthday with a 10-day festival.

Pony trekking is a popular activity, as are many water sports, which take place at beaches Glassilaun, White Strand, Lettergesh and Tully. Derryinver Quay and Ballinakill Harbour are also well worth a visit. Nature lovers and bird watchers will enjoy the opportunity to discover a great variety of bird and marine life.

The traditional music scene is vibrant in Renvyle. Regular musical concerts and dancing take place at the Teach Ceol in Tully, and everyone is encouraged to join in. The Connemara Mussel Festival takes place on the May Bank Holiday annually  showcasing the locally produced seafood specialities in a festival atmosphere.

Letterfrack is a leader in local and community development. It is the home of Connemara Community Radio (broadcasting on 87.8 and 106.1fm) as well as a third level furniture and woodworking college. This adds to the young and vibrant atmosphere of the village for much of the year.

The Connemara Environmental and Education Centre (ceecc.org) holds regular events annually in Letterfrack, including Bog Week (May/June) and Sea Week (October). A lively musical tradition also exists in the village, with regular music sessions and concerts taking place throughout the year.

Kylemore Abbey boasts a Victorian walled garden, woodland walks, children’s play trail, mountain hikes, a beautiful Gothic church and an excellent craft shop and restaurant. Events including choral performances, guided garden tours and seasonal activities ensure that there is something for everybody at Kylemore.

The romantic setting is also one of the most popular photo opportunities in Connemara, so don’t forget to bring your camera! The lakes of Kylemore are renowned in the fishing world and the Kylemore Fishery offers permits for salmon and sea trout on the idyllic Dawros River.

A lively music scene can be experienced in Cleggan’s four bars, as well as the very freshest fish and seafood. A number of beautiful beaches dot the coastline between Cleggan and Claddaghduff all the way around the peninsula, including Sallerna and Rossadillisk. Pony trekking and fishing are also popular activities and the surrounding area boasts many sites of archaeological interest, including tombs, standing stones and walls.

Omey Strand is extremely popular for pony trekking, walking and even learning to drive on the compacted sands at low tide. Make sure to check tide times before exploring Omey Island though, or you could end up staying longer than you’d like!

Tag Rugby tournaments, triathlons and community games are just some of the events which take place here during the summer months. Equine enthusiasts will also enjoy a visit to Claddaghduff, either for the thrilling spectacle of the Omey races which takes place in late July/early August every year, or the Claddaghduff Pony Show (dates flexible). A regular schedule of events also takes place in Claddaghduff Community Hall.

Saint Macdara’s Island is located off Mace Head on the Carna coastline. Macdara is the patron saint of fishermen and sailors in the area. Every year on July 16 (depending on weather and sea crossing conditions) the bay fills with many different shapes and sizes of boats as the marine and local community undertake an annual pilgrimage to the island, where mass and the blessing of the local boats takes place.

Sean-Nós (old style) singing in Gaelic is traditional to the area and if you are lucky you might hear some in one of Carna’s pubs.

Situated behind the village church is the community graveyard, which is accessed by a steep (signposted) road. Driving is not advised, but the hill is easily accessible on foot for able-bodied individuals and the resulting vista is well worth the hike. Make sure to bring your camera!

A small but charming strip of shops makes up Recess village, with Joyce’s Craft Shop and Art Gallery providing a genuinely good reason to get out of the car and stretch your legs. Recess is the home of the famous Connemara green marble and don’t forget to visit the Connemara Giant in the car park opposite to make a wish.

Maméan is a local hilltop pilgrimage site and is well worth a hike for those inclined to experience the spectacular views it affords. The remote townland of Bun na nGnoc connects Maméan to the Inagh Valley and is a perfect example of unspoilt Irish rural countryside.

Situated between Recess and Roundstone, Ballynahinch was a railway station on the long abandoned Galway to Clifden Railway line and some of the old track sections may be accessed for walking. The history of the area as a landed estate is still apparent in its well-tended grounds, woodland and waterways. Ballynahinch Castle also has a number of looped and signposted walks that are open year round.

The small island of Inishnee in Roundstone Bay is connected to the mainland by a narrow bridge (located about 2km from Roundstone) and is a wonderfully unique destination. Home to a small local population – as well as to hundreds of hares, Inishnee offers a glimpse into the peace and tranquillity that makes the Roundstone area so attractive to those needing a break from the demands of their busy lives. Rolling green fields, boggy hills and fresh sea air make this little hidden gem of an island an accessible and worthwhile stop on any walking, cycling or driving tour.

2 and half mile wide, by 5 miles long, discover the magnificent and magical island of Inishbofin. Ascend the heights of the majestic Diamond Hill with its panoramic 360 views from the summit. Journey back in time and visit Marconi’s oringinal radio telegraph station, explore the landing site of the first transatlantic flight by John Alcock and Arthur Brown, and discover a 5,000 old walkway all within a couple of hundred meters of eachother on the Roundstone Bog Walk!

We are beginning with 3 walks initially, and we intend to add more as the season continues. We will also be adding some exclusive private tours, academic field trips and other walks outside of Connemara in due course – stay in touch, or should we say, follow with us on Twitter.

5000 years old, Newgrange is located in the Boyne Valley. A world listed heritage site, Newgrange is a Neolithic Ritual Centre and Passage Tomb with architectural links to the prehistoric maritime peoples of Portugal, Northern Spain, Brittany, Denmark and the Western Isles.

This building is a thousand years older than the Pyramids and the oldest astronomical observatory in the world, completely intact since the Stone Age. Its decorated entrance stone and Corbelled inner chamber display the most impressively executed examples of abstract Stone Age art of the early farming communities in Western Europe.

These sophisticated early farmers were Astronomers who incorporated a light box and solar calendar into the passage. This was done to illuminate the cremated bones of the dead in the inner chamber during the Winter Solstice. It was also a symbolic technique to celebrate rebirth in the afterlife and the dawning of a new year.

Please note: We enter the Tomb at Newgrange. On this tour you will not be waiting in line, as we have an allocated time slot.

About Michael

Michael’s knowledge of Ireland’s highlands and islands has been gained by over thirty years of exploring its multi-faceted landscapes on foot, by boat and from the air. This experience has given him the ability to put together the most interesting walking and cultural itineraries that Ireland has to offer. Michael Gibbons, a native of Connemara, is one of Ireland’s leading field archaeologists, a writer, broadcaster and mountaineer.

Michael is a former director of local and national archaeological survey programmes. Other work has involved research on the pilgrimage tradition in Ireland. He spent three seasons as a field director surveying and excavating the summit of Croagh Patrick in County Mayo, climbing 2,510 feet to work every morning!

Michael’s work has taken him to such diverse places as the Negev Desert, Egyptian Sinai and southern Greece. He has lectured throughout Ireland, at Oxford and Cambridge, the Maritime Museum in Sydney and the University of Melbourne, Harvard University and at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C..

He has been the focus of numerous TV and radio programmes on Connemara, the Aran Islands and the Irish Highlands. These includes CNN, SKY TV, RTE, UTV, TnaG, BBC TV, BBC Radio 4, PBS and more recently as a researcher on the BBC History of Britain series presented by Simon Schama, and more recently on the BBC’s ‘Monty Halls Great Irish Escape’.

He worked as a researcher on the Irish in America series The Long Journey Home. He also presented a series of eight programmes for Irish television on the famine in Ireland. Eamonn de Buitléar, a leading landscape filmmaker, produced a documentary on Michael entitled ‘Connemara in Antiquity’.

Recent discoveries he has made in maritime and upland archaeology include; some on Skellig Michael UNESCO world heritage site, a series of fish traps, ancient harbours and quays in Connemara, together with a series of megalithic tombs, standing stones and and a number of important ancient forts.

He has been the focus of several newspaper articles, most recent of which were articles in the Irish Times and The Economist.

The SKODA Tour de Conamara 2013 will be held on Saturday 25th May 2013 in Clifden, Connemara. The event offers participants the choice of 140km or 80km routes and will travel through some of the finest coastal and mountainous landscape in Ireland. Sign up before April 14th to receive a Tour de Conamara cycling gilet.

The cycle will take place on a Saturday for the first time as part of a weekend festival of cycling that will provide activity and entertainment for all. Along with the 140km or 80km sportive options, cyclists have a further option to take part in a 40km team time trial in South Connemara. This is a chance for cyclists of all abilities to sample a weekend of cycling, taking part in a longer sportives ‘stage’ to a 40km challenge with work colleagues, clubmates or friends.

There will be plenty of social activity in Connemara to supplement the cycling events over the weekend.

The race takes in some of the most breathtaking scenery on the west coast of Ireland, and
follows a figure of 8 loop beginning and ending in Roundstone Village.

The course will be officially measured and chip timing will be provided for all
participants. Refreshments will also be made available on the day.

It is the perfect distance at 23km and will involve a 7km run/walk, 15km cycle and a 0.5km kayak through the most magnificent scenery of Leenane and Killary Fjord. Lol, is a mixed media artist who has been living and working on Inishbofin for the last 10 years.

Whilst chatting with customers in her small studio/shop on Inishbofin she  established that overnight tourists coming to the island were keen to explore their creative side, so has sought to incorporate workshops for tourists.

Lol has planned the ‘taster’ workshops so that tourists can also enjoy exploring the breathtaking screnery that Inishbofin has to offer, as well as experiencing the social trad night life on the island.

Now in their 2nd year her workshops are laid back in approach and she hopes will inspire participants to continue their creative journey when back on the mainland.

The workshops for Spring/Summer 2013 will be held at  Inishbofin House Hotel & Spa, in a light and airy room overlooking the beautiful inner harbour.

The courses are aimed at absolute beginners.  Those with previous experience welcome too.

Get the Blessing (previously known as The Blessing) is a jazz rock quartet based in Bristol, England, active since 2000. They were formed when Jim Barr (bass) and Clive Deamer (drums), the rhythm section from the trip hop group Portishead, teamed up with Jake McMurchie (saxophone) and Pete Judge (trumpet) over their mutual appreciation of Ornette Coleman. To date, they have released three albums, their debut All is Yes won best album at the 2008 BBC Jazz Awards. Their most recent album, OC DC, was released in 2012.

Built for the Harbour Master nearly 200 years ago, The Quay House has been sensitively restored and now offers guest accommodation in fourteen bedrooms (all different) with full bathrooms – all but two overlook the Harbour.

Family portraits, period furniture, cosy fires and a warm Irish welcome make for a unique atmosphere of comfort and fun.

The owners, Paddy and Julia Foyle, are always on hand for advice on fishing, golfing, riding, walking, swimming, sailing, dining, etc – all close by.

The Quay House is Clifden’s oldest building, dating from C1820. It was originally the Harbour Master’s house but later became a Franciscan monastery, then a convent and finally a hotel owned by the Pye family. Now providing Town House Accommodation in Clifen, it is run by the Foyle family, whose forebears have been entertaining guests in Connemara for nearly a century.

The Quay House stands right on the harbour, just 7 minutes walk from Clifden town centre. All rooms are individually furnished with some good antiques and original paintings; several have working fireplaces. Traveling past Ballynahinch Lough to your right, you will see the ruins of the ‘castle on the lake’ which once served as a prison to those who had ill-treated animals. ‘Humanity Dick’ Martin would treat the offenders to a stay on the island – ball and chain included – he ultimately founded what we know now as the RSPCA. Be sure to stop off in Recess and visit Joyce’s Craft Shop, home to Connemara Marble.

Turn back towards Clifden; after about 500 metres turn right (before the narrow bridge) onto the R344, which takes you through the Inagh Valley. Meandering past Lough Inagh, the Twelve Bens are to the left, with the Maum Turk mountain range to the right. This is a stunningly beautiful scenic route, taking you past turf stacks, sheep and glorious countryside, until you emerge at the other end of the valley. Here you can turn left to return to Clifden and visit Kylemore Abbey on the way, or turn right to extend your tour further towards Leenane.

Omey Island is next, accessible by car or on foot at low water, by crossing acres of firm sandy beach – follow the direction poles in the sand on your way across, and be sure to check the tide timetable beforehand on the Irish Sailing Association website.

Omey has a wealth of antiquities. Teampaill Féichín can be found on the northern side of the island, a medieval church built on a 7th century Christian settlement that was covered in sand until 1981. The ruin is about 14 metres long and 7 metres wide. St Féichín’s well can also be found to the west, just above a rocky inlet. Returning to the mainland, continue towards Claddaghduff and then on towards the working fishing village of Cleggan.

From there you can take the ferry to Inishbofin Island (check ferry times and fares on the Inishbofin Island Discovery website), but don’t forget to enjoy a delicious meal in Oliver’s on your way back! Then, either take the bog road back to Clifden or continue to Moyard via Ballynakill Lough – and then turn right on your way back to Clifden.

Connnemara,Greenland and Iceland

This summer we sailed to Greenland and Iceland. I had long wanted to see Greenland – the land, the ice, the Eskimos. My boat – an insulated steel ketch with wood and diesel stoves for heat – is good for Arctic travel.

Ben and Sam, young Americans with sailing experience and the desire to go anywhere, joined me. We were out 7 weeks and traveled 3000 land miles.

We had a great sendoff from Clifden quay. We headed out into a NE gale, a good wind for Iceland. That evening one crew was wet, cold and seasick, and another bashed his head, possible mild concussion. When the wind backed to directly from Iceland, we returned to Inishkea North, Mayo and enjoyed the tranquility of the island for 2 nights.

Posted from Heimaey Island, SW Iceland:

Took 7 days to get from Inishkea North to Iceland where we are now. We passed Rockall, a marvelous & tiny haystack of a rock solitary in the middle of the vast sea, powerful currents around it. We caught mackerel & ate it fried & raw (sashimi), absolutely super. We caught a seabird on a tuna lure and took it and marinated its meat for an elegant dish. We caught a lamprey eel that attached itself to the rudder, but no one had the appetite to skin and cook it.

Each day of northing shortened the night, from mild darkness to the north in Ireland to almost broad daylight, no night at all, here at Heimaey Island. The boat steered herself by setting the sheets and all slept through most nights.

Heimaey is spectacular with its volcanism and ferocious erosion. I’m going to the 1972 volcano after this. It erupted and destroyed 400 homes back then. Its surface is still hot – dig down into the pumice a few inches and you can cook food in it.

From Olafsvik, west Iceland:

Entering Faxafloi, the bay of Reykjavik, was splendid. A brisk breeze against us, the sea and air blasting with vigor, immensely rugged lands ahead and around us with Snaefellsjokull towering 50 miles to the north. The land is so rugged & on a titanic scale that people are a mere flimsy veneer clinging to the coastline, no more.

We traveled mainly by night which was marvelous. You get 6 to 8 hours of sunset/sunrise, endless and ever changing. Totally hypnotic. Night in the Arctic summer is definitely the time to travel.

From Ammassalik, East Greenland:

Took 4.5 days to cross the Denmark Strait to Greenland. We entered the ice fields 3x. By ice field I mean vast regions of concentrated floes and bergs. The Danes (the colonizers of Greenland) call this the storis, the until recently impenetrable ice fields coming down from the polar basin year round. This pattern changed dramatically in the past decade, due to global warming, and small boats like mine can enter a month or two a year. Two locals told me that 5 sailboats come in each year, in August.

Sailing through the floes is like no other experience. Luminous blue & white floes all around as far as one can see. Seals basking on floes or in the sea, a hurtful expression on their faces. Whales rising to the surface. Ice-fog misting the whole, then suddenly rising to show the horizons white with the ice field. The occasional colossal berg amid the flat floes.

Sailing through the floes… Total utter concentration, seeking out passages ahead, where to go, where not, passing floes with feet or inches to spare, or knocking off floe edges when I had to squeeze between two. Running over small stuff. A constant vigilance, like downhill slaloming, or racing over boulders.

We sighted Greenland far far away, when the ice-fog suddenly lifted. A shocking view, an immense and far off shark’s mouth of raggedy teeth, up & down the whole coast and receding far far inland in fading ranks. These mountains steeper & far more jagged than shark’s teeth. Rising to 4000-6000 ft. A powerful moment that the 3 of us had long sought.

1500 Eskimos here. I love looking at their faces and shapes. Talked with a few – not too many speak English – they tend to be bilingual in Inuit & Danish. There is a calmness, a sparseness of ego, a deep sense of respectfulness & boundaries between people. This compared to the Americans and Irish I have known.

Later, from Ammassalik:

We had a very intense few days in dense ice. Went up the fjord west of Ammassalik Island.

1st night at an abandoned Eskimo village, about 10 houses, most dilapidated. Church-school, graveyard behind, each grave a pile of rock on the granite, marked with painted white cross nothing more.

Moved up into a branching fjord and got within a mile of glaciers. The Greenland ice cap looming over us, a vast heavy whiteness spanning the horizon between & behind the mountain peaks. It seemed crazy to try to anchor in the dense continually moving floes. So we anchored up against a floe in the middle of the fjord. 100 by 75 feet, our own little kingdom. I swam in the morning, then had coffee on the flow in just my boxer shorts until my feet could no longer take it. The sun shining, blue sky, no wind, the barometer steady, wonderful.

We motored out, several x pushing through solid blockages of small floes. Sailed across and up the 5 mile wide fjord, a splendid sail with much blue water between giant bergs & no clutter to dodge. Came to a small island a km square, a hunting shack on it. Went around to the landward side, anchored, walked ashore. Two stone ruins, about a dozen small hollow cairns containing the bones of the Eskimo dead, some very old, the cairns collapsed & overlain with slow-growing moss, others with bits of skull, two with nice skulls. One was a child. Such utter remote wilderness – the two stone ruins so well placed to overlook the vastness of the fjord shambolic with bergs, the jagged mountains, the ice cap looming over all. Of course to the Eskimo this is his backyard, and the coastline and islands are littered with cairns and the bones of the dead, everywhere.

At this anchorage a wind shift pushed the ice down to us. A berg moved onto the anchor chain in 30 ft water. Happened very fast! We were unable to retrieve the chain, figured this berg would serve as bulwark against any other ice until the next high tide. So it proved, and retrieval on the tide was no problem.

From Clifden:

The last night in Greenland, stayed up til 3.30 am drinking and dancing. The pub was like the Wild West – wonderful.

We left the next morning. Passing thru a last small ice field I was careless and hit 2 bergs hard trying to squeeze between them. Nice shallow ding a few feet aft of the bow, 2 foot across and half an inch deep.

The return from Ammassalik to Clifden took 12 days. Lots of minke whales in the 60s latitudes. In the 50s a pod of respectful pilot whales accompanied us awhile, then lots of dolphins cascading in from all sides to share the joy of the world with us. Ben and Sam hung onto the bobstay under the bowsprit, inches above the water, and touched the dolphins on their backs and dorsal fins many times.

We went from 24 hours of light to day/night. Saw the stars for the first time in 6 weeks. Ditto phosphorescence – that of our wake, and that of the trails of dolphins zigzagging under and around the boat in the dark.

We came into Clifden to a welcoming flotilla. Sailed up to the mooring, tied up, and had all aboard for hugs and a celebratory drink.

It is great to be back – my friends, Elsa my dog, Connemara the land, my house. The end of an adventure, now renewing my old/new life.

This great festival has been designed to suit all levels of walkers from casual low level walks to the more experienced. Each day there is a choice of at least 3 walks from strenuous to low level and we have also added a guided cycle on both the Saturday and Sunday so if you don’t fancy walking both days you can give this a go. This year the programme includes the firm favourite Mweelrea as well as the ‘Devil’s mother’, Maameen, a level walk with geologist Kevin O Callaghan. The full programme of events can be found on the village website www.leenanevillage.com.

Each walk is guided by qualified, experienced guides and covered by public insurance. Another unique element of the festival is that the local farmers get involved with guiding the walks and share their vast knowledge, folklore and history of the land. With the farmers involvement in the event, they kindly grant the participants permission to cross their lands and visit areas that are not normally open to the public. Transport to and from starting and finishing points will be provided as well as tea/coffee and scones at various local businesses at the end of each day.

Other evening events over the weekend will include a race night on the Saturday and the annual Ceili and BBQ in aid of the local Red Cross on the Sunday.

Gary Brow will give his views as to why such gardens were established in and around Clifden in the 19th century and how they have fared since then. The associated houses will be identified along with their garden lay out plans and topography to illustrate Connemara’s adaptation of the Victorian walled garden. The important features incorporated into their construction to permit their function, as mainly a kitchen garden, will be presented along with the probable reasons for the majority’s deterioration over the years. In concluding, the speaker will give his reasons how and why they might survive and continue to be a very suitable heritage.

Gary Brow is retired and lives at Faul, Clifden. His recent book Connemara’s Walled Gardens-Clifden and Environs was published at the end of 2012. Gary is also a member of the local Gardening Club. The successful flight had won the two fliers a £10,000 prize and a place in aviation history. Competition for the prize was intense and several aircrafts had gathered at St John’s in preparation for the challenge; one attempt had already failed. The average speed during the Atlantic crossing was 120 miles per hour. On takeoff, the Vickers-Vimy carried 865 gallons of petrol and 40 gallons of oil. On arrival at Derrigimlagh, she still carried sufficient fuel for a further ten hours flight. The flyers wore electrically heated clothing, Burberry overalls, fur gloves and fur-lined helmets. The battery for heating their clothing sat between them in the cockpit. They carried with them 300 private letters, the first transatlantic airmail in history.

Crossing the Irish coast, Alcock and Brown spotted the tall masts of the Marconi wireless station at Derrigimlagh. Recognizing their location, Alcock decided not to go any further. Switching off his engines, he glided towards what he thought to be a level stretch of ground behind the station. The wheels touched down and ran on a short distance, before coming to a stop as they sank into the bog. The nose dipped and the tail lifted, and fuel began leaking into the cockpit. The airmen scrambled to safety, stepping onto Irish soil.

O’Dalaigh Jewellers, located on Main Street, Clifden, offer a fine collection of Connemara Marble jewellery in Celtic and contemporary designs, which is handmade on the premises. Their online jewellery shop, celticimpressions.com displays an excellent choice of remarkable pieces, sometimes inspired by magnificent Celtic artefacts in silver and gold exhibited at the National Museum of Ireland, the illuminated Book of Kells or the rock carvings of the Newgrange monuments.

The station was not officially opened until 17th October 1907, when commercial signalling commenced between Clifden and Glace Bay. It was a sight to behold, with the huge condenser house building, the power house with its 6 boilers, and the massive aerial system consisting of 8 wooden masts, each 210 feet high extending eastwards over the hill for a distance of 0.5 kilometres. The aerials gave off sparks which could be heard in the distance, indicative of the huge power and voltages involved (150KW at 15,000 volts).

As time moved on, advances were made in the technology and a more powerful station was built at Caernarfon in North Wales. The Clifden station was attacked by republican forces in July 1922 and some buildings were damaged. The Marconi Company sought compensation from the new Free State government, but this did not materialise. The station was closed shortly after.

The remains of the station have lain dormant since the contents were sold for scrap after the closure. Employees of the station have passed away and regrettably, little has been done to record the details of what was a great industrial enterprise of the 20th century. The Clifden and Connemara Heritage Society are currently planning on developing the site for the public to enjoy. It is expected that this will become a major tourist attraction in a beautiful landscape.

Connemara Hill Lamb is produced by a Connemara Black-faced Horned Ewe unique to this region and dating back to the 1800s. It matures at a slower rate, gaining the benefits of its natural habitat. The result is a lamb of specialised taste, quality and flavour imbued from a diet of fresh herbs, heathers and grasses indigenous to the Connemara region. The main constituents are the grasses Agrostis, Festuca and Molinia and the sedges Carex, Scirpus, Eriophorum and Trichophorum. Other important plants are the heathers Calluna vulgaris, Erica tetralix and Erica cinerea and the plants Narthecium ossifragum and Potentilla erecta. The lamb has a succulent flavour with a very pronounced aroma.

In February 2007, Connemara Hill Lamb Ltd. was awarded the European Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status. This means that the use of the name Connemara Hill Lamb is reserved exclusively for hill lamb born and reared within the designated area, and is protected against imitation, exploitation or misuse. Connemara Hill Lamb is also fully traceable from farm to fork and is available seasonally from the month of July. Further information about Connemara Hill Lamb here.

Connemara Pony shows are held worldwide, but the most famous of all is during the Connemara Pony Festival held every August in Clifden. It is a week-long event organised by the world-famous Connemara Pony Breeders Society (CPBS). Visitors are treated to the spectacle of seeing the ponies demonstrate their prowess in trials and competitions, all under the watchful eye of experienced judges, and a win is always a source of great pride for the pony’s dedicated owner. It is a unique experience to see the very best of the breed on display at the Showgrounds in Clifden.

Today, Connemara ponies are bred worldwide. The Connemara breed standards are set by the CPBS and to pass as Grade 1, a pony must undergo careful inspection and meet a series of specific criteria.

Not surprisingly, riding a Connemara Pony is an activity that visitors to Connemara are particularly fond of. Cleggan Beach Riding Centre, Errislannan Manor Riding Centre and The Point Pony Trekking and Horse Riding Centre are three good places to choose from.

Introduction
Clifden (An Clochán in Irish, meaning ‘beehive cell’), the recognised capital of Connemara, was founded in 1812 by local landlord John D’Arcy and built on his private estate. Nestled between the rugged peaks of the Twelve Bens mountain range and the rolling waves of the Atlantic Ocean, the town is renowned for its hospitality and dramatic scenery with plenty of walking, cycling and sailing nearby. The town plan, oval in shape, allowed for two wide streets leading to Market Square and connected by a narrower street. The development of the town was greatly aided by the construction of access roads and a pier in the 1820s, improving communications and bringing large-scale employment to the region.

By 1826, Clifden had 100 houses, mostly of two storeys, along with 30 shops, a brewery, a distillery and a mill. The area suffered greatly during the Great Famine, but Clifden recovered somewhat with the arrival of the railway in 1895. Fourteen houses were burned down by the Black and Tans (17 March 1921) during the War of Independence and the destruction of more houses during the Civil War (1922–23) necessitated a good deal of rebuilding in the mid 1920s. What we see today dates mainly from the late 19th and early 20th century. Start your tour near the Millennium Monument (2000) in Market Square.

Estimated length of tour: 1.5hr / 4.5km

1. Start on Market Square, where you can examine some of Clifden’s 19th century Town Houses. Note the distinctive castellated gable of E.J.King’s Bar and Restaurant, which appeared in the earliest sketches of the town (1840s); the metal and glass canopy above the entrance to Foyle’s Hotel; the moulded work on the first floor of Millars and rich stucco facade on The Central (Main Street) – all date from the early 20th century. Continue along Market Street, passing the Whistlestop store. Note the individual cornices to its first floor windows (1920s) and the engaged columns with console capitals on the ground floor of Lowry’s Sweater and Gift Shop from the late 19th century. Pass Clifden Library, turning right onto Bridge Street.

2. Two stone bridges, Ardbear Old Bridge and Ardbear New Bridge, span the Owenglen River where it forms a waterfall. Facing east, view the ‘three-eyed’ Old Bridge erected by John D’Arcy (c. 1819) and a film location for scenes in ‘The Quiet Man’. The rising ground on the right was the site for one of Daniel O’Connell’s Monster Meetings, held in 1843 in demand for the repeal of the Act of Union. Further along, Ardbear New Bridge (c. 1824) spans a deep ravine. The ruins seen from the pedestrian bridge housed a mill in the 19th century. A small hydroelectric station was opened there in 1925 which provided lighting to Clifden until the 1950s. Nearby, a small path leads up to the old Bridewell (gaol), built in its present form in the 1820s. Return along Bridge Street, taking a right into Hulk Street.

3. Continue 20 metre to the Connemara Pony Breeders Society and Showgrounds. The CPBS was established in 1923 for the purpose of taking steps that would lead to the preservation and improvement of the Connemara Pony breed. The building houses a small museum exhibiting material relating to the Connemara Pony and the history of the society. The Showgrounds are the venue for the world-famous Connemara Pony Show, held every year on the third Thursday in August. Continue to the end of the street and cross over to the Station House Courtyard.

4. The Station House Bar with its distinctive red roof tiles is the site of the former Clifden Railway Station. The Galway to Clifden Railway ran over 48 miles, had 7 stations and was in operation for 40 years (1895–1935). Although of great importance to the development of the town, it was never profitable and closed on 27 April 1935. Today, there is interest in opening sections of the line as a walking trail. Here you can visit the Station House Museum (1998) in the former locomotive shed beside the Bar; it houses interesting artefacts relating to the Connemara Pony and the town’s early history. Then, continue to the Galway Road, stopping outside the Tourist Office.

5. Look upwards, across the road, to the former Convent of Mercy (1855–2001). From here the Sisters of Mercy ran a primary and secondary school for girls, an orphanage and an industrial school. The Convent has ornate window surrounds and a cut stone arch and fanlight over its two-leafed door. Cross over and continue to the Courthouse (c. 1840). This classic building with carved limestone and wonderful sash windows is the oldest functioning building in Clifden Town. Restored in 2005, it is one of few in the country that has retained its Victorian interior. Continue right to St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church (1879).

6. Mass was first celebrated here on 20 July 1879. The spire was erected in 1898, the clock and bell installed in 1899 and the organ was added in 1900. If you want, you can choose to enter and admire the magnificent stained glass windows purchased from the Joshua Clark Studios, Dublin (later the Harry Clark Studios) in 1907 for a little over £450. Then, cross at the pedestrian lights and to the right. Take the next left alongside the old Roman Catholic churchyard (1820–1879). Continue past Church Hill to the Church of Ireland, Christ Church, on your left.

7. Erected in 1853 in the neo-Gothic style, Christ Church replaced an earlier church (c. 1820). Damage sustained during a storm in 1961 required the demolition and redesign of the west end. The church hosts many recitals year round, especially during Clifden Arts Festival every September. Take time to view the clear tracery windows and relatively unaltered interior. In the graveyard you will find the tomb of the town’s founder, John D’Arcy (1785–1839) and the grave of his son, Rev. Hyacinth D’Arcy (1806–1874), first minister of Christ Church. A little east of the church entrance also lies the grave of Seán Lester (1888–1959), who was an important Irish diplomat and last Secretary General of the League of Nations.

8. Continue westwards, to the junction with the Sky Road. Take a left to the next stop or continue 500 metre ahead (10 minutes by foot) to the John D’Arcy Monument situated at the summit of Monument Hill, which is a steep but short ascent. From there you can afford an excellent panoramic view. In the distance to your right is the site of the Marconi Station (1907–1923) and the landing site of the first successful transatlantic flight (Alcock and Brown, 15 June 1919). John D’Arcy was born in County Galway and was the proprietor of over 20,000 acres of west Connemara. His residence, Clifden Castle, can be viewed from the Lower Sky Road (1500 metre) further west. The base of the monument was erected soon after his death, but it was not fully completed until 1992.

9. Clifden Town Hall (1908) was built with the financial assistance of emigrants living in America. This is a protected structure and is currently under renovation. It hosts traditional Irish nights during the summer months. Opposite are panoramic views of Clifden Harbour and to the west is the Town Quay, designed by Scottish engineer Alexander Nimmo (1783–1832). The stone warehouse alongside was used as a government food depot during the Great Famine (1845–1852). Continue to our final stop, the Thomas Whelan monument, 15 metre on your right.

10. Thomas Whelan, a native of Clifden and member of the Dublin Volunteers, was executed in Mountjoy Jail on 14 March 1921 (War of Independence) for the murder of a British Officer in Dublin, despite pleading innocent. In retaliation two days later, the IRA shot dead two policemen on patrol in Clifden. Later that night, a section of the British Army known as the ‘Black and Tans’ arrived by train, burned 14 houses, killed an innocent civilian and seriously wounded another. Many of Thomas Whelan’s letters, writings and personal effects are on display in Kilmainham Gaol Museum in Dublin. Continue back to Market Square. In your view to the right is the Methodist Chapel (1854–1908) while to your left, carriage arches are visible at Sea Mist House and the Bank of Ireland.

The Roundstone Pony, Dog, Sheep & Domestic Arts Show is a great day out for all the family, friends and visitors to Roundstone. We have an exceptional Show ground; a dedicated and hard-working committee; and a list of honest, impartial Judges who do not personally know the competitors or ponies. The Tour de Conamara takes place on Saturday May 25th and will introduce cyclists to the most spectacular coastal and mountain cycling route in the West of Ireland. The following day the Tour de Conamara Sportive Team Time Trial takes place giving you a chance to sample two consecutive days of cycling, just like the pros. This year the fourth leg of the series brings us to the Isle of Man for the Lighthouse Challenge on July 7th. The event is a 160km coastal loop of the Isle of Man over the routes that inspired World Champions and some of the leading pros on the current professional scene.

The key to the event’s success has been its ability to offer a unique package of experience. The popular sport of long-distance running is transformed for runners and walkers in the dramatic setting of mountains, glacier lakes, rugged green-brown landscape which winds in and around the challenging mountain wilderness of Galway in the west of Ireland. The course meanders past bogs, hills, lakes, and the Twelve Pin mountains rising up over the great expanse of Killary Lough, through the quiet village of Leenane, around the Maam Turk Mountains and all the way back up to Maam Cross. International participants enjoy the Irish welcome, the sense of comradeship on the lonely route and unmistakable buzz throughout the day. No other sporting event sends people away with such a taste of Ireland and all its highlights.

The addition of the 39 mile Ultra marathon launched in 2004 proved to be an enormous success. Ultra distance running is growing in popularity throughout the world on a scale not seen since the marathon boom in the early eighties.

Michael Gibbons and Shane Joyce will open the series of Clifden Heritage Society’s Talks for 2013 on Wednesday 16th January next with a talk entitled — Re-discovering the forgotten Marconi Stations of Letterfrack and Currywongaun.

Duplex telegraphy which allowed messages to be sent on telegraph wires was a sensational advance on land line Telegraphy when patented by Thomas Edison in 1892 .

Wireless duplex telegraphy was invented 10 years later by G. Marconi based on experiments carried out at Letterfrack between 1911 and 1912, giving him a temporary lead in the then highly competitive Radio/Wireless market .

The talk will describe the development of the working station at Currywongaun/Tooreena and also the little known original station at Letterfrack.

The talk will be held at the Audio Visual Theatre in Letterfrack National Park at 8PM Weds 16th January 2013.

O’Dowds Seafood Bar, Restaurant and Cafe is located in the center of Roundstone village overlooking the harbour with panoramic views over Roundstone Bay & the Twelve Bens. It has been run by the O’Dowd family for four generations since 1906. A bar has been operating on the premises since 1840 and it is widely regarded as the oldest pub in Connemara. It is now famous for its excellent fresh local seafood and it has one of the best pints of Guinness in the locality.

O’Dowds has been serving both locals and visitors since 1840. Originally known as “Kelly’s Hotel” it became O’Dowds in 1906 and has retained that name ever since. For most of that time it was a combined Bar and grocery shop, only ever changing temporarily to a Funeral Parlour during the making of the movie ‘The Matchmaker’ in 1996.

The grocery shop is now gone – although you can still see the hooks in the ceiling for hanging meat- Wood paneled walls and open turf fires give it an atmosphere of warmth and friendliness.

Their mission has always been to serve the freshest of local produce at a fair price in a friendly and relaxed environment. Their focus is on serving excellent local Connemara seafood as well as meat, chicken and vegetarian dishes.  All of their breads are homemade, as is their seasonal soups and of course, their famous Seafood Chowder. They also have their own Herb/Vegetable garden which supplies them (when in season) with Tomatoes, Lettuce, Cucumbers, Artichokes, Raspberries, Redcurrants, Strawberries, Apples, Mint, Fennel, Dill, Rosemary, Sage and Lovage.

They are recommended in all the major guide books, including: The lonely Planet, The Rough Guide, Georgina Campbell, Frommers and The Bridestone Guide. They were recently delighted to have received a Michelin Bib Gourmand for three consecutive years, 2011, 2012 & 2013, the only Connacht restaurant to do so, and were very proud to be voted Best Gastropub in Connacht by The Sunday Independent readers in 2011.

RTE’s Nationwide recently featured Connemara based artist Deborah Watkins in their programme. Here’s a clip from the programme above that aired last month. It features Deborah’s work and her studio and also the Lavelle Art Gallery in Clifden where herself and her husband, painter Gavin Lavelle make a living.

About Deborah

She studied craft design at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin. Her chosen speciality was ceramics and graduated with a first class honours degree (B.Des.) in 1991 and a diploma in Art Education (H.Dip.Ed.) two years later.

She moved to Connemara after graduation for what was to be a Summer job and twenty plus years later, she’s still there!  During this time she has worked as a potter and a teacher and has subsequently ran her own business making decorative raku pots and selling them around Ireland.

She took a long break after this to have her family of three daughters but kept up her drawing and painting skills as much as she could. In 2008, she started to paint more or less full-time. Deborah wanted to return to a creative way of living but one which allowed her to manage a young family as well. Painting seemed to fit the bill and it was also a welcome departure into new territory for Deborah. The directness of the act of painting was something that struck her immediately as being very rewarding.

I think that my paintings are informed by what I have learned as a potter, particularly my work with raku. I choose rich, metallic colour to depict the Connemara landscape which often brings me back to the lustrous glazes of my former career.

Every time a visitor satisfaction survey is published the results are the same, with Ireland’s wonderful scenery (still impressive, despite everything) and the warmth and friendliness of the people coming up trumps every time. – although there was some slippage in the boom years, when visitors were not always welcomed by people with good local knowledge, or staff were ‘too busy’ to give the individual attention that makes a stay memorable.

Neverthleless, we have more than our fair share of really great hosts, whose nature is genuinely hospitable, and Paddy & Julia Foyle’s special brand of hospitality has become legendary. These long-time hoteliers have brought their magic to a number of West of Ireland businesses over the years, and their present quayside property has become a favourite destination for the many guests who appreciate everything about the place – the quirkily stylish and extremely comfortable surroundings, the delicious breakfasts and, most of all, the owners themselves.

They are consummate hosts: thoughtful, engaging, helpful and generous with local knowledge – and, perhaps most importantly, have the true hotelier’s instinct of when to give their guests space. A stay is always a luxuriously enriching experience, simply because they have thought of everything.

It doesn't get more Americana than Josh Harty. His father, both a preacher and the Police Chief of his boyhood small town, was also Harty's music mentor. "I was either going to jail, or to hell," Harty muses. That kind of humor, that hell-bound hope, is in the center of Harty's music. Music captured on the new disc, polished in performance in America, and now ready for another UK tour in support of Nowhere.

Together with his father, Harty says he "sang in just about every church, Lions Club, Elks Club, and senior citizen center within 200 miles of Fargo." When his parents moved out of the area when Harty was a Senior in high school, his devotion to the school's music program and its director led him to relocate to an apartment with his older brother,5 years his senior. They lived near the Empire Tavern in downtown Fargo, and for the impressionable young musician, watching the cast of characters come and go was like going to songwriting college. The hard life, lies and perseverance in the face of both, surface to the top of Harty's music like a beer mug ring left behind on a wooden bar top.

Those in the upper Midwest who have watched Harty grow since his move to Madison, Wisconsin in 2005 know what he can make happen live. His warm, woeful voice is buoyed by charismatic guitar playing. He can hush a bar room. When he lets his guitar do the talking audiences are carried all the way in.

First of all: what’s with the two addresses – connemara.net and connemara.com? Aren’t they supposed to be the same thing? For the past 15 years or so they have been. If someone browsed to connemara.com it was taken to mean connemara.net, and they were redirected to the site you’re on now. Only it didn’t look like this then. It looked pretty pedestrian, because I’ve never been interested in fancy web design. When Google came along in the late 90′s and quickly became the biggest search engine using a white background and unstyled, blue underlined links, it made my day.

But now they’re separate sites simply because connemara.net needed a redesign – that was the address that people used, and continue to use. Connemara.com is a place to keep old content, and try new stuff before putting it on the main site. Looks apart, the biggest problem with connemara.net was just that it had fallen slowly into disrepair as a consequence of my having emigrated from Connemara to Australia in Nov. ’03. A trip I remember well, as it happens, since Tina and I flew accompanied by the late, great Bridie Mannion of Errislannan.

I tried to keep things going over the years, but found I just didn’t have the time, and in any case how could I keep a portal site about Connemara going from the other side of the world? That didn’t make sense. I ended up using it more as a sandbox: somewhere to try out web development ideas, stick them online, and see if they worked. One of the more interesting directions the site took was to promote videos about Connemara on YouTube, which soon got out of hand as all the related videos for each movie were also loaded on the page for each video that was being shown, and so on down the rabbit hole, world without end, a story which deserves to be told separately.

Still, for all my experimentation with the site, I felt bad about the fact that it was still being used by people to find out what was going on in the west since it still ranked well in Google for Connemara. In early 2011 I was contacted by a businessman in Connemara who was putting together a marketing initiative to promote “Brand Connemara”. He felt that the domain name connemara.net would suit the proposed web presence of this broad spectrum of local tourist and commerical groups. For a couple of reasons I wasn’t convinced my services were required here. For a start the project being suggested was a natural fit for the www.connemara.ie domain name, presumably preserved for any such broadly representative effort, if ever there was one.

Secondly, keyword domain names are not at all necessary to build an online brand: think of twitter, amazon, yahoo, google, ebay, etc. In May 1997, shortly after I bought the name connemara.com, Malachy Bodhrán told me he’d been contacted by an American woman disappointed that that top-level domain name wasn’t available any longer for her American Bearded Collie (or “Beardie”) project. It meant something to me to be able to put a portal-type site about Connemara with a decent web address, using a top-level domain (tld) like connemara.net or connemara.com. Before YouTube (pre-2004) I even had videos on connemara.tv. But nowadays I don’t think those domain names matter so much any more. The linguistic possibilities, should you want to promote an area, are endless: there’s oughterardtourism.com, The Connemara Loop, www.galwaytourism.ie, and anyway, there are plenty of new or relatively unused tlds now like .eu, .name, etc.

So what with that particular reawakening of interest in the site and the usual chatting to Noel about plans for local sites in general, I woke up to the need to get the site ship-shape again. I put it to Noel – would he be interested in working on the site, helping to redevelop it while maybe getting a place to lay down some “Whats On” content? To my immense relief, he was up for it, and did a whole site redesign with new content, new look and feel, new everything. There’s nothing from the old site on the new one. Except the address.

So what’s the plan from now on? Well, it’s a cliché; to say that social media integration is the future, so let’s get that out of the way. I’m a huge fan of Google Plus so I’ll be working on integrating the site with the Connemara.net Google+ page. Although I can’t stand it, a lot of people seem to like Facebook, so we may end up using their commenting system to add to our articles and events pages. And expect more Flickr photos. Video interviews are a distinct possibility too. And maps – loads of maps.

The site needs more cowbell, and we’re on it.

Born in Blagoveshchensk, a city in Russian Far East in July of 1992, Nikolay Khozyainov is emerging as one of the most promising new names of the next generation of pianists. He began to play the piano at the age of five. He studied at Central Musical School of the Moscow P.I.Tchaikovsky Conservatory (1999-2010). Nikolay studied with Yury Lisichenko.   

Since 2005 he is a pupil of professor Mikhail Voskresensky. Nikolay is a student of Moscow Conservatory since 2010.
Nikolay was awarded:
-1st Prize and Special Prize for the best performance of “Rondo-Capriccioso” by F. Mendelssohn at the International Piano Competition “Virtuosi per musica di pianoforte”(Czech Republic, 2003),
-1st Prize at the IX International Carl Filtsch Piano Competition (Romania, 2004),
-2nd prize at the VI Moscow International Frederic Chopin Piano Competition for young pianists in Moscow, special prize “for the best performance of miniatures” (2008).
Nikolay Khozyainov was the youngest finalist of the XVI International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, Poland (October 2010).

His mature and sensitive artistry has impressed public, music lovers and observers. He got excellent critics as the very good interpreter of  Chopin`s music.
In 2012 Nikolay was awarded the 1st prize at the Dublin International Piano Competition 2012.
Nikolay has performed in renowned concert halls of Russia, Poland, Romania, Hungary, Czech Republic, Malaysia, South Africa, Germany, Switzerland, France, USA and Japan.
In 2011 CD Accord released Khozyainov’s CD(worldwide distributor Naxos) consisting works by Chopin and Liszt.
In April 2012 Nikolay recorded CD with JVC Victor in Japan, it is going to be released in autumn 2012.

Since its inception in 2005, the sonic.art saxophone quartet has created a furore at German and international concert venues, thrilling music-lovers and music critics alike.
The quartet enthusiastically performs works which in almost all cases originally composed for their instruments and initiates the creation of new works in collaboration with composers.
The ensemble’s uniqueness is also underscored by many prizes won by the young quartet. Among its commendations are First Prize and the Grand Prize of the International Chamber Music Competition for New Music in Cracow, Poland, the German Music Competition Award and the Switzerland’s Classical Music Award.
sonic.art was also named a winner of the Salieri-Zinetti International Chamber Music Competition as well as the International Chamber Music Content in Almere, the Netherlands.
In 2010 Germany’s Jeunesses Musicales awarded the ensemble its ‘Best Newcomer Ensemble’ prize.
The ensemble has gained valuable insight from its mentors and fellow musicians Prof. Eberhard Feltz (chamber music/string quartet), Prof. William Forman (trumpet), and Jacques Ammon (piano). After intensive studies at the Berlin, Basel, and Cologne State Music Conservatories, the sonic.art saxophone quartet has itself begun teaching at conservatories and universities campuses in Germany and abroad.
The concert artists place a strong emphasis on their collaboration with important composers of New Music such as Sophia Gubaidulina, Helmut Lachenmann, Walter Zimmermann, Georg Katzer, Olga Neuwirth, Fabien Lévy, and Steffen Schleiermacher.
Concert tours have already taken the quartet throughout Europe as well as Asia, America and Africa. sonic.art has appeared in concert at the ‘Warsaw Autumn’, Festival de Mexico, the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Schleswig-Holstein Music Festivals and the Cambridge Summer Music Festival and is a welcome guest at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, the Gewandhaus Leipzig, the Berlin Philharmonic, Gasteig München and the Osaka’s Izumi Hall.
The quartet’s debut CD was released on the GENUIN classics label in cooperation with Deutschlandfunk in early 2010.

This was a huge boost to the technological infrastructure of Clifden at the time, and promised to future-proof the town with high-speed connectivity on land-based, wireless and mobile connectivity. The MANs network was installed and a small data-center was established outside the town.

However, this was only the first step.

The next step was to attract a “carrier” i.e. Vodafone, UPC, Imagine etc., to make use of the infrastructure and provide high-speed connections to the end user (higher than standard DSL speeds that we now experience), a step that has alluded us until now.

I’m delighted to announce that E|net, the company enlisted by the state to provide this fibre optic infrastructure, has confirmed with me that the Clifden MANs network will be “lit-up” in the next coming weeks.

To be clear, appointed by the state, E|net’s role in this is as an infrastructure provider, and they are not a carrier where you can buy a high-speed connection directly from.

Speaking to Niall Beirne of E|net today, he was quick to stress that this is only the beginning, and that now, the onus is on us, as a business community, to come together and lobby one or more of these carriers to provide high-speed connectivity services to Clifden.

In the next coming weeks the network will be lit up, and next month E|net are planning an official press event, together with some info talks to help businesses gain an understanding for what this will mean for the town.

As a designer and web developer, I heartily welcome this great news. For a long time we have been waiting for this day to arrive. I would urge all businesses to attend any of the meetings setup by E|net and support the drive to get one or more of these carriers to provide connectivity services in the town.

What this will mean for your business is higher speed connections, improved 3G services and future proofing for the next wave of mobile technology, 4G and LTE. We have a long way to go, but a great foundation stone has been laid.

We’re delighted by this news and look forward to helping our clients gain a better understanding for what this will mean for their business and the community as a whole.

Of course we do not discount the much wider audiences of the iPhone and Android platforms, which is why we are developing for both of those right now, but we just wanted to start with something that excited us, and developing for the iPad felt like the right place to begin, and now we’re delighted that it’s available.” says Noel.

The app also features longer articles on Connemara’s rich heritage and history where visitors can learn about brave aviators, pioneering inventors and interesting local curiosities. There’s also a section dedicated to Connemara’s wildflowers through an interactive slideshow.

Upland Blanket Bog dominates the landscape of much of Connemara, spreading to the very summits of the Twelve Bens and Maumturk mountains. The hands of Neolithic and Bronze Age farmers helped to form the bogs, which give to Connemara its particular form of beauty, especially in the autumn when the heather is in bloom and the purple moor grass turns golden.

The Blanket Bogs are, in a very real sense, are Ireland’s rainforests. They not only absorb water and release it slowly throughout the year, in the process feeding streams for spawning countless salmon and trout, but also contain a multitude of rare and fascinating species of wildlife. These include several intriguing species of carnivorous plants. There is still a vast amount to learn about the complexity of the bogs and their role in maintaining the local ecology

Mitchell's Cafe at Kylemore Abbey is a child friendly restaurant. We welcome families. We have highchairs and baby changing facilities and colouring sheets and crayons to keep the little ones entertained.

Tea House by the Walled Garden is open from Easter to Halloween and boasts spectacular views over the Connemara National Park. Fresh herbal tea is served daily using herbs grown in the Victorian Walled Garden. The Tea House at Kylemore Abbey is the perfect location for a relaxing coffee and treat after a walk through the walled garden. The Tea House can cater for 110 people indoors and 50 people outdoors.

So, whether your visit includes Morning Coffee and scones, lunch or afternoon tea our cafe has something for everyone.

Gaillard Pottery was first created in the early 1970′s in Dublin by Alan Gaillard Shattock and has recently re-opened at his new purpose built studio in Clifden, Connemara. Using all natural raw materials for his glazes Alan produces a range of stoneware pottery which includes table and ovenware, lamps, giftware and individual one-off pieces that are ideal for wedding presents or as gifts for special occasions. A new addition to Alan’s work combines intricate beach-combed driftwood, uncannily moulded by the sea into life-like forms, with hand-built ceramic bases, which are unique.

Visitors are most welcome to visit me at my studio situated only 2 km from Clifden on the main N59 road to Westport, where you can also see the feltwork landscapes by Alan’s wife Sandra.

On Mondays from 12 noon to 1pm children will have the opportunity to come along and listen to some animal stories told by a member of park staff. This event will take place in the Education Room and will be followed by a craft activity. Children must be accompanied by a parent/guardian at all times. Suitable for 3 to 10 years. Our Fun with Nature for Children consists of different topics. We will look at Pond Life, Wildflowers, Butterflies & Moths and Bugs & Mini Beasts. Children will learn about the different topics and the event will be followed by arts & crafts. This takes place in our Education Room in the Visitor Centre and is strictly for 5 yrs to 12 yrs. All children must be accompanied by a parent/guardian at all times. Rainwear and boots will be needed depending on the weather. Early arrival is essential as space is limited. This event is FREE.

About Connemara National Park

Situated in the West of Ireland in County Galway, Connemara National Park covers some 2,957 hectares of scenic mountains, expanses of bogs, heaths, grasslands and woodlands. Some of the Park's mountains, namely Benbaun, Bencullagh, Benbrack and Muckanaght, are part of the famous Twelve Bens or Beanna Beola range. Connemara National Park was established and opened to the public in 1980.

Much of the present Park lands formed part of the Kylemore Abbey Estate and the Letterfrack Industrial School, the remainder having been owned by private individuals. The southern part of the Park was at one time owned by Richard (Humanity Dick) Martin who helped to form the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals during the early 19th century. The Park lands are now wholly owned by the State and managed solely for National Park purposes.

The GSOW is a 125km charity cycle around the scenic surrounds of Connemara Co. Galway, with all proceeds going to Cancer Care West. Anyone interested in getting on their bike can register online – the entrance fee is €35. You can also get your family and friends to donate and support the event also.

Celebrated as heroes in Mexico every September, the San Patricio Battalion were a group of soldiers who broke away from the Anerican army in 1847 and joined with their opposition, the Mexicans, in solidarity. Led by John Riley of Clifden, the 'San Patricos' paid the ultimate price for deserting America, but are still revered as heroes in Mexico for their willingness to fight and die with them, a fellow Catholic people.

This shared Mexican and Irish episode in history will form the backdrop for a joing commemoration in Clifden which will be attended by His Excellency, the Mexican Ambassador to Ireland, Carlos Garcia de Alba and his embassy officials. Mexican and Irish traditional music and dance, talks and exhibitions, will take place in various venues over the five days.

It is important to note that this event is not just for boys! You need no special skills to compete in this challenge, just mental strength, fitness and some upper body strength for some elements of the course. As with all of our challenges it is open to the hard core elite and the gym dodgers alike!

Please be warned that your clothing will get extremely wet and dirty. Also you will be climbing through, under and over trees, fallen trees, climbing ropes, jumping off obstacles and much more so you may receive cuts, bruises and grazes. We highly recommend that you wear full body cover, not just shorts and T shirt.

Experience the beauty of Connemara on this road and cross-country event with a choice of either a full or half marathon. The event allows the participants to enjoy the splendour of both the Maumturk Mountains and the Twelve Bens while walking along the Western Way. The highest point of the walk is at Maumean, a height of 259m, which all walkers pass just before the last checkpoint.

The route is from Killary to Maum Bridge in Connemara, mostly along the Wetern Way. All walkers will check in at the Community Centre in Maam Bridge before being brought to the start of the walk by bus. Walkers depart the centre at 08.00 for the full marathon and 09.30 for the half marathon.

There will be six stages to the Marathon, and the first section of the walk is the "Killary Loop"; the Half Marathon will begin at Stage 3 near the Tooreenacoona River, 21 kms (13 miles) from the start of the Full Marathon.

Pre-registration for the event is required, and registration details can be downloaded from the club website.

The fee is €25, which applies to both options, and includes transportation to the start of the walk as well as a meal on completion.

It is important to note that you will get wet and dirty; you are running through bogs, along mountain paths and up Croagh Patrick! This is not a triathlon, a marathon or a fun run… it is an adventure race which will test you both physically and mentally, but the elation you will feel at the end when you cross the finish line, will make it all worth it!

Not quite up to the level for Gaelforce West? Then why not try the Connemara Adventure Challenge on the 12th May which is only 31km. And, if you are looking for something even more extreme, check out the new Gaelforce Extreme which will see you take on a longer kayak, climb Mweelrea and then take on the normal Gaelforce West course!

About Gaelforce

Gaelforce West was set up in 2006 and was the brainchild of Jamie Young of Killary Adventure Co. It consisted of two events Gaelforce 6 and Gaelforce 12 and was run by a voluntary committee supported by Failte Ireland.  An adventure festival was also run in conjunction with the races for the first two years. In 2008 GF 12 was no longer run as enthusiasm for such a long and gruelling race was minimal. In 2010 GFW grew in numbers seeing 3,000 competitors take part.

Gaelforce Cycle West, a 24hour mountain bike and road bike race ran for the first time in 2009. This event saw 140 competitors cycle through the night on both road and mountain bike routes.

Gaelforce Events was set up in 2009 to bring these events under one brand umbrella. In 2010 we introduced two new events, the Connemara Adventure Challenge and the Turf Guy Challenge. The Connemara Adventure Challenge saw 900 competitors cover a 31km course over Connemara. Turf Guy, saw over 300 competitors complete a 10km course over coming a number of obstacles along the way. In 2011 we added another new event to our calendar Gaelforce North in Donegal. This saw over 400 competitors take on a great new 64km course.

For 2012 we are adding two great new courses to our events. Gaelforce North will see the additional of a new sprint course of 40km to go along with the 64km course. Gaelforce West will have an Extreme version which will see the country’s elite take on the tried and tested Gaelforce West course but will also have to conquer Mweelrea mountain and complete a 4km kayak.

There will be a céilí at the community Centre at 21.00 with the Lough Erne Céilí Band. Admission: €10 per adult, and €7 per child. Refreshments will be provided.

There will be a pub session at Day's Bar at 22.00. On Sunday, there will be a sean nós dance workshoop at the Community Centre with Ronan Regan at 12.00 noon. Admission: €7 per adult and €5 per child. There will be a pub session at the Inishbofin House Hotel at 14.00.

Re-Creating the Spark Mechanism for the BBC Coast Programme

One of the most interesting TV programmes regarding the Clifden Marconi Station in recent times was undoubtedly the BBC Coast programme. A scaled down transmitter was re-created at the site using a vintage spark generator and a recreated ‘air condenser’ replicating the eighteen hundred steel plates of the original condenser house at Derrigimlagh. Frank McCurry and Tom Frawley of GMIT designed and built the air condenser for the Coast team and they will be giving a lecture on the building of the device and the making of the BBC programme.

The Heritage Value of Clifden Marconi Station

Michael Gibbons will be giving a talk on the heritage value of the Clifden Marconi Station. Having spent almost a year researching the Clifden Station, Michael will undoubtedly give a fascinating talk on the Derrigimlagh site, the history of which goes back much further than the time of the arrival of Marconi.

Marconi’s Training School at Seaforth: Alma Mater of Jack Phillips

Poldhu in Cornwall was the site of Marconi’s original intended transatlantic station, which was superseded by Clifden as the eventual working station. Through the good offices of Colman Shaughnessy and the Radio Officers Association we have been in contact with this most historic of wireless stations. We are very pleased to have Willie Williamson, Archivist of the Association, to visit us from the UK. As an ex radio officer and a lecturer on Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS), he is eminently qualified to speak on Marconi’s first wireless training school at Seaforth near Liverpool. This is the school where Jack Phillips and other famous operators learned their trade before plying the high seas.
