Part raconteur and all-out entertainer, Mama Kin has been nominated for ARIA and AIR awards in her native Australia. A renowned live performer Mama Kin has shared stages nationally and internationally with the likes of Ani di Franco, John Butler Trio, The Cat Empire and The Waifs.
Mama Kin returns to Ireland following her successful tour last year which earned her Irish Times Gig of the Week and was captured in a short shot by Ambiguous Fiddle Media, entitled Irish Roads. This very special short includes an exclusive live performance of “Jenny” by Mama Kin and John Butler, at sold out Vicar Street show in Dublin. The Magician’s Daughter showcases an assuredness and potency that has come to define Mama Kin.
As the youngest of six children, born into a family of Maltese extraction, her childhood was immersed in music. But it is her mother, an actual magician’s daughter, for whom her follow-up album is named. Mama Kin’s grandfather worked as a professional magician in post World War II Malta, and her mother, Iris, was one of his assistants. “She is the ultimate magician, the holder and weaver of the smoke and mirrors, but somehow the truest believer,” Mama Kin says. It is this mysticism, this intangible truth that underpins Mama Kin’s musical expression. For Mama Kin, this is what music is capable of conjuring: connection, release and human effect.
