A moderate and gentle four-six hour hike of the spectacular Roundstone Bog complex. A very special walk. Features extensive rare bog habitat, quaking bog, a multitude of lakes and includes the historic Derrygimla site where ground breaking transatlantic communications took place (Marconi’s wireless telegraphy, Alcock & Brown’s flight landing spot). Distance is about 10km with some gentle climbing. Terrain is mainly very rough wet bogland, along with sheep track, long grass and surfaced minor road; requires waterproof boots with good ankle support and grip. Also bring some food, water and outdoor layers. Costs euro 40/person with places currently available for booking in advance. Involves a car drop as this is a linear walk.
Often referred to as ‘The other Galway Races’, the Omey Races take place annually on the strand at Omey Strand, Claddaghduff in Connemara. Re-established as a tradition in 2001, the annual summer races have been steadily attracting greater numbers every year and last year drew a crowd of almost 5000 people for a wonderful day of sun, sand, sea and of course, horse racing. With up to nine races on the card, there’s opportunities for young, upcoming jockeys to hone their skills, while providing a great day out for spectators. The races this year are being held on Sunday, July TBC. The first race will be off at 1pm sharp, so don’t miss out.
